Sand paper in Kenya: choose the right grit for the job

We stock sand paper in five grits: P-40, P-60, P-80, P-100 and P-120. The lower the number, the coarser the paper and the faster it removes material. Higher numbers leave a smoother finish. All five are listed for wood, metal, drywall, filler and painted surfaces, and P-80, P-100 and P-120 are also listed for plastic, so the same range serves painters, carpenters, welders and homeowners doing a repaint.

P-40 is the heavy-duty coarse grade, for stripping paint, removing rust, shaping rough timber and fixing badly damaged surfaces. P-60 is also coarse but gives you a bit more control for rough sanding and paint removal. P-80 balances fast removal with control, for levelling rough timber, cleaning metal and smoothing filler before you move to a finer grit. P-100 is a medium grit and P-120 a medium-fine grit, used for refining wood, walls and painted surfaces before you paint, varnish, polish or seal.

The usual order is coarse first, then finer: for example P-60 or P-80 to remove material, then P-120 before the paint goes on. The paper has a flexible backing for hand sanding and works with sanding blocks.
